The pastizzi project started back in 2017 as a means to democratise and demystify contemporary art within Malta, with an aim to create art work that was familiar and within reach to all social demographics.
The iconic Pastizz serves as a vessel to bridge Maltese contemporary identity and social narratives through sculptural satire. A playful object with many stories to tell.

Each incarnation over the years has seen the pastizzi go from hand sized sculptural pieces, through to jewellery made in silver and precious metals and stones, oversized wall hung sculpture, and more recently, virtual works.

THE CENTRE
The first incarnation of The Pastizzi Project titled 'Rituals for Consumption’ features a wall hanging installation measuring six by five meters and will be comprised of around 300 cast crystal pastizzi. The aim of this large work is to emulate the colours and effects of a stained glass church window. Specialist lighting is being installed to amplify its presence within the stark Carrara setting.
From a thematic perspective, the work takes on a satirical and somewhat humours angle in which the local pastizz becomes more than a consumable savoury pastry and rather, is elevated towards finding authenticity in the daily rituals of the contemporary Maltese demographic.
